Jessica Brown/Mahsati Janan

Jessica Brown, stage name Mahsati Janan, is an instructor and performer specializing in
dances of the Middle East, North Africa, and related stage and folkloric dances inspired by
the cultures of the MENAHT region. With a teaching style that joins dance theory with
cultural foundations, Mahsati’s classes offer students an opportunity both to learn the
necessary technique and understand the cultural contexts of these dance forms.
Mahsati began her journey in belly dance in 1996 and has taught and performed throughout
the U.S. She specializes in the stage and folkloric dances of the Middle East and North Africa
and variations of those dances that have continued to evolve outside of the countries of
origin. A few of her focus areas include Egyptian Raqs Sharqi, Egyptian Folkloric styles,
Turkish Oryantal Dans, American Classic Orientale, and folkloric dances of Tunisia, Libya, and
the Arabian Gulf region. In addition to teaching strong foundational belly dance movement
techniques, Mahsati has an educational background that focuses on cultural traditions. Her
anthropology background and research emphases are also strongly represented in her
classes as you learn the history and traditions of this dance while enjoying yourself dancing.
