The drum solo is an exciting part of a belly dancer’s traditional repertoire. During each class of this series, we will start with technique drills focused on foundational belly dance movement vocabulary and then focus on elements commonly used when dancing to drum solos such as shimmies and accents. We will cover some of the basic rhythms used in drum solos and how to recognize and add the right stylistic flavor for each. The 12 class semester course will also build to a fun drum solo choreography to give you the chance to put it all together on stage.
Wear clothes that are comfortable for movement and that allow the teacher to see your body position. You may want to bring a scarf to tie around your hips, but it is not required. You can dance barefoot, in socks, or in dance shoes. If you wear shoes, something with a flexible sole would be best unless you require stiff soles or orthotics for extra support.
Drop-ins are welcome. This a multi-level class that offers variations and modifications suitable for beginners through advanced dancers. The 12-class semester runs from January 12-April 13. The final scheduled class will be March 30 with April 6 and 13 available as potential make-up dates for missed/cancelled classes or recital rehearsals as needed. Class will culminate with an informal showcase on Saturday, April 20th at 7pm.
